5Pin Media proudly presents Bass Line Sequences Vol. 1 – tailor-made for minimal techno, hypnotic techno, deep tech, and tech house.
5Pin Media fired up 12 of their prized sequencer-driven analogue bass boxes and a couple of their favourite software bassline emulations to bring you a diverse sound palette with spades of character that range from minimal, percussive, classic acid, to downright unruly.
The main goal behind this collection was to create variations for a given pattern that can be combined in interesting ways. Typically, you will find each successive version has a more aggressive tone and/or variations in expression – think of it as varying shades of the loop which can be used to build a more complex and evolving 8 or 16-bar section in your composition. This will make the part more dynamic and feel less like a single static 4-bar loop.
Combine darker versions of a pattern by applying a low pass filter to give a sub-bass part more weight with a brighter aggressive version on top with a high pass filter, then crossfade with another tonally different version. Panning differing versions opposite to one another (with a high pass filter applied) creates a thick and wide top layer with a subtle chorus depending on how much they vary. Once you embark on combining the different variations in this manner, new ideas are likely to follow, and the loops take on a new dimension.
Re-sequence the patterns by slicing and triggering the slices via MIDI, resulting in a completely new pattern that can be as dense or sparse as you want. This is by far the most inspirational and powerful technique for maximising the potential of these bass loops.
All the loops have deliberately been left dry with the exception of a few wet versions with the dry version present. Dry loops are far better for achieving the above-described composite loops and effects such as reverb or delay can be applied to taste to glue the net result.
The soul and essence of the analogue machines have been captured across 925 loops at 123, 125, 126, 127, 128, 130, and 132 BPM. WAV and Apple formats are included with corresponding MIDI files for some of the patterns.
The majority of the 82 MIDI files were programmed in 303-step sequencer fashion and then converted to MIDI ensuring the correct note lengths, slides, and accents were preserved. The included instruments and patches will play the MIDI true to the original 303. The note velocities have also been optimised for the reliable playing of any other MIDI bass instrument including soft synths such as ABL2 by Audiorealism and Phoscyon by d16 as well as hardware synths such as the XoX Box, TD-3, and TT303.
