Emptyvessel have released Foresting, a TAL Sampler expansion made in a collaboration with Jogging Houseavailable for €20.00.
Foresting – to cover an area in forest // in this case to add the energy, calm and peaceful stillness of the forest to your music.
Forest bathing/Shinrin Yoku – the conscious and contemplative practice of being immersed in the sights, sounds and smells of the forest. It was developed in Japan during the 1980s, and in 1982 Japan made this form of mobile meditation under the canopy of living forests a part of its national health program. Researchers, primarily in Japan and South Korea, have established a growing body of scientific literature on the diverse health benefits.
The inspiration for the sounds is the shared love for the outside and being in nature and the calm, therapeutic energy we feel when immersed in the forest.
The sounds were created and processed with a diverse and at times unusual set of hardware, some of which you can see in the image below of Boris’s small studio. Emptyvessel’s contribution came from a Novation Summit, Arturia Polybrute, Sony dictaphone and TAL J-8. All were processed through my small 4ms eurorack FX case, Tascam 424mk2 and an Elektron Octatrack.
The overall feel is understated and usable but very dusty and characterful. Ideal for textured ambient and soundtrack work, the sounds form a cohesive set of 42 presets designed to feel like they all come from the same instrument with a range of aged timbres from different oscillators/sources.
TAL Sampler’s Param knobs are mapped to give immediate control over important aspects of the sound such as noise layers and pitch instability. Full patch notes are included in the download which explain the patches and any additional mappings for the mod wheel and Param knobs.
Foresting requires TAL Sampler 4.5.4 or later (not included).
