HISSandaROAR have released SD066 Whiteware Deconstructed, available at the intro price of $52.00, increasing to $79.00 after the promotion. The offer ends April 14th.
HISSandaROAR suspect most sound people have noticed the resonance of their washing machines – slamming the door on a clothes washing machine or a tumble dryer usually has a satisfying ring to it. And having recorded HISSandaROAR’s old dryer while it was still functioning led HISSandaROAR to dream about disassembling it so they could be more aggressive. As luck would have it, HISSandaROAR replaced their old agitator washing machine recently so before it & the Tortured Dryer get recycled, they pulled the machines apart, keeping the main resonant steel body intact but removing the wiring, circuits, motor and rotators.
As HISSandaROAR began extracting sounds from them, they built up the level of physicality – starting with mallets and hands, friction mallets, threaded rod, double bass bow, all while recording in my studio. Then dropping parts into them & whipping them with cables. Picking them up & slamming them down, and capturing that warped metal sound when you pressure the side panels. The two rotators provided some very interesting tonalities, which iconic resonant pitchy impacts as well as dampened takes.
Next HISSandaROAR moved outdoors and began destroying the bodies by throwing them around, dragging them on concrete & smashing them with a heavy axe. These are such loud sounds HISSandaROAR had to wear hearing protection. The bodies eventually crumpled as they lost their structural integrity, and the dryer they ended up flattening.
These recordings are output 24bit 192kHz multitrack and unprocessed, with full dynamic range intact and plenty of headroom. Approx 10 takes per file, seperated by 1 second of silence for auto slicing. See file list below.
