HISSandaROAR have released VEH003 Trailer Onboard, available at the intro price of $33.00, increasing to $49.00 after the promotion. The offer ends June 9th.
The trailer has a light steel wind-shield at the front which rattles. The deck is mostly made of steel, so it has a lot of interesting resonances. Also being a trailer, there is minimal engine noise so I figured it was worth recording for use as onboard components for many other vehicles.
After doing initial test recordings, I decided the light steel wind-shield at the front of the trailer was too rattly. So I used ratchet tie downs/strops to firmly wrap the wind shield in blankets, as per the photos below.
The trailer was rigged with six mics and my Sony a6300 camera:
- Sennheiser MKH8040 LR on each wheel
- Sennheiser MKH8020 pair sheltered LR behind the wind shield
- Sennheiser MKH8050 sheltered centre behind the wind shield
- LOM Geofon on chassis, capturing rumble.
The surfaces driven on include:
- Down a driveway, scraping plants & bushes
- Suburban driving 0-50kmph (0-30mph)
- Suburban arterial route driving 50-70kmph (30-45mph)
- Highway driving 90kmph 55mph
- Gravel road driving 0-50kmph(0-30mph)
- –Driving over multiple judder bars or speed bumps 0-10kmph (0-5mph)
