UFX37 Dinner Bell
A fun bit of trivia about bells in films. When HISSandaROAR worked on the film EMPEROR (2013, trailer) there was a scene set at a school and HISSandaROAR had an idea of using a school bell as a scene transition at one point, like a memory slowly crossing back into reality.
HISSandaROAR wanted to be authentic as the film is set in Tokyo in 1945, immediately after WWII. So what bell to use? HISSandaROAR selected three or four bells that they thought might work and then contacted a dear friend & sound designer based in Tokyo, KT-san and asked him. He had some thoughts but he kindly deferred to his elderly Mother and played her the options. And her choice went into the film. Arigatou gozimasu to KT-sans Mother!
UFX38 Light Shade
This odd shaped hexagonal bell was sitting in a junk store waiting for HISSandaROAR.. By design it has no ‘donger’ so has to be played with a mallet, but despite its size and odd shape, its sound reminded me of a classic dinner bell, or an old-school school bell. So HISSandaROAR recorded some single hits with a few mallets & then performed some articulations as per ‘schools out!’ or ‘dinners ready!’ – released now as a little 24bit 96kHz UnitFX library.
UFX39 Impulse Gun
Thanks to Delia Derbyshire HISSandaROAR always keep an eye and ear out for interesting light shades. HISSandaROAR picked up this big light shade for next to nothing at the local recyclers, as it looked a bit like a Telinga dish… It’s made of some thin metal and when HISSandaROAR tapped it, it had a really strange zingy tonality. So they took it home & recorded it with the Sanken CUX100K mics and have now released as a little 24bit 96kHz UnitFX library.
