Impact Soundworks have released Leonard Solomon’s Extraordinary Machines, available for $49.00.
Extraordinary Machines is an unconventional collection of one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted works of genius, combined into one convenient, easy to use sample library.
This library is, in a word, extraordinary. Featuring an unconventional collection of tonal and atonal instruments conceived and built by one truly unique man.
The stars of the show are his one-of-a-kind inventions like the Bellowphone, Bottle Organ, and Oomphalapompatronium, though the collection is filled out by more familiar instruments as well. Leonard Solomon’s Extraordinary Machines is especially well suited for lighthearted and whimsical tracks, specific sound design applications, and outside-the-box inspiration. We hope these fanciful creations will push your creativity in all-new directions.
- Hand-built, one-of-a-kind instruments – Each machine was hand-crafted by Leonard Solomon himself and imbued with incredible character you won’t hear anywhere else. All recorded in the same space they were invented: Leonard Solomon’s wood shop and home.
- Four signature “extraordinary machines” – Leonard Solomon’s beloved multi-instrument Bellowphone is the star of the show; other unique machines are the Bottle Organ, Oomphalapompatronium, and Callioforte.
- Miscellaneous sounds galore – In addition to the larger instruments, this collection includes Leonard Solomon’s Pneumatic Cymbal, Cuckoo Machine, Small Horn, Laughing Horn, Warbler Whistle, a selection of distinctive horns, and more.
- Lifelike and customizable – Mechanical noises and functional parts of the instruments have been meticulously recorded, including autofilling bottles and bellows, pump mechanics, releases, and more. Just as Leonard does with his real instruments, dial in the tuning and effects from subtle to wildly discordant.
- Ideal for sound design – Includes collections of both tonal and atonal sounds that have been processed and designed to be perfect for texture, effects, and more.
The instruments:
- The Majestic Bellowphone – Leonard’s signature device! A multi-instrument composed of many individual wind and percussion instruments activated by a foot pump. They’ve all been individually sampled and can be individually controlled.
- Bottle Organ – Hand-made latex ball bellows connected to a series of pitched bottles suspended in a custom wood frame make up this one-of-a-kind creation. The Bottle Organ boasts soft, round organ tones reminiscent of carnival games and world fair music.
- Oomphalapompatronium – Made from a wheel, pottery, tin cans, and water bottles. It all comes together to form a robust horn section that delivers a wonderful cacophony of extraordinary musical tones.
- Callioforte – Two and a half octaves of chromatic pipe whistle tones that drip medieval and airy high tones; the perfect instrument for soft melodies, and whimsical hooks.
- Sound design collections – Both the atonal (atonal soundbeds, effects, oddities and noises) and the tonal (Baritone Bottle, Brain Razor, Cup Flute, Oompha Synth, Gargantuan Kazoo and Clown Nose Chord), processed and designed for texture, effects and more.
- Miscellaneous instruments – In addition to Leonard’s beloved kazoo, we’ve sampled a treasure trove of creations from his archive: Pneumatic Cymbal, Cuckoo Machine, Small Horn, Laughing Horn, Warbler Whistle, and a selection of unique tonal horns.
