HISSandaROAR have released FX027 Spiral Trash Cymbals, available as a limited time FREE download. The offer ends January 1st after which the price is $29.99.
This library involves an 18″ Zildjian Spiral Trash Cymbal and if played as a normal cymbal, it has a very bright, toppy tonality… However, by using contact mics the bottom end of the spectrum is augmented a lot! And with decay dampened the scope of use is also expanded… So HISSandaROAR explored every way they could think of to generate sounds with it – from simple trashy crash sounds, drops, rolls, bowed & struck with different mallets & decay dampening… All while recording to six tracks: Trance Audio contact mics x2 on the bell of the cymbal plus Sanken CUX100K x2 stereo and Sennheiser MKH8040 x2 stereo
Keeping the contact mics attached was a challenge, as the vibrations travelling up the length of the cymbal would often shake them loose… But if HISSandaROAR used small clamps to attach them anywhere on the cymbal, the weight of the clamps would dampen all of the decay. So it required double sided sticky tape, constant monitoring & frequent replacement….
After a few recording sessions in that configuration, HISSandaROAR removed the contact mics altogether, as they wanted to try being more violent with the cymbal – stretched out & twisted/tangled the cymbal makes some really interesting warped metal sounds… But such violent motion means there was no way I could keep the contact mics attached… Freed from that physical constraint, I twisted the cymbal inside out & shook the living daylights out of it!
