Song Athletics and BORO have released Gems, available as a FREE download.
BORO is a creative sound studio based in Tiohtià:ke / Mooniyang / Montreal, led by composer and sound artist Noah Cedar Sherrin. Prioritizing accessibility and intuition, BORO hand-makes tools and resources for artists with the aim of inspiring their personal journeys through sound.
Gems is a collection of 5 free exploratory instruments. Originating from BORO’s ongoing R&D in digital lutherie, these simple sound objects offer an eccentric palette of new colours for your music. Presented in the free Decent Sampler format, with a simple and intuitive interface, Gems gives a no-barriers look into the world of BORO.
The instruments include:
- Lamplit – Soft guitar cloud creator – Inspired by the etheric 6 string tones of artists such as Skúli Sverrisson and Leo Abrahams. Mini humbuckers through Univox EC 80A tape echo and modular processing. Short and long variants. [les paul > univox ec 80a > erbeverb]
- Hala – Auric tape pad – A take on the perfect layering pad. Juno 106 sampled through a tube preamp to slightly damaged cassette tape. Warm, fuzzy, and wide. [juno 106 > 610 tube preamp > portastudio 424]
- Ferro – Warm electro-mechanical piano – A versatile, mellow electric piano balancing the softer dynamics of a slightly wonky Rhodes MK2 with the acoustic resonance of an upright piano and mechanical hammer sounds. [rhodes mk2 > 610 tube preamp . line audio cm4s for mechanical sounds]
- Vaila – Fragile voice constellations - Vocalist and composer 王睿琪 Ruiqi Wang’s voice recorded to cassette tape loops. For creating sinuous waves of interwoven vocal threads. [ruiqi wang > sm7B > fostex x28]
- Hecate – Fractured bandoneon drones - An old wheezing bandoneon with polyphonic wavefolding. An offering to the luminary Pauline Oliveros. [bandoneon > stereo line audio cm4 > wavefolder]
