HissAndARoar Release SD074 Air Vortex

HissAndARoar have released SD074 Air Vortex, available at the intro price of $33.00, increasing to $49.00 after the promotion. The offer ends April 14th.

This library came about from a technique HissAndARoar discovered through experimenting with compressed air. Back in the early days of HISSandaROAR, HissAndARoar explored everything they could think of at the time for the SD005 PRESSURE library and while that library contains tons of useful sounds, they’ve never had access to their own air compressor. But last year developing began in a little workshop for making things & got a compressor with enough hose to reach to my recording room downstairs.

Recording started with simple experiments – performing air blasts into various objects, such as a tuba, trombone, spray tank and many sizes & types of pipes. While the sounds were useful HissAndARoar wasn’t hearing anything new… They persevered and was thinking about how brass instruments are actually played, so they began constricting the air flow into the objects, in an attempt to simulate embouchure (the use of the lips, facial muscles, tongue, and teeth in playing a wind instrument)

The first surprise was from inserting long thin strips of rubber into a long pipe. The chaotic air flow & activation of the rubber created a ‘tearing’ sound that reminded me of how rocket engines tear the air…

HissAndARoar recorded lots of variations… But then it happened! Using another pipe, some of the rubber got loose, moved down the pipe & jammed! HissAndARoar instinctively blew more air into it, attempting to release it but to no avail. So they increased the pressure to the point the pipe was bulging, like it was going to blow apart and suddenly the rubber freed itself & made a totally unexpected sound as it travelled along the pipe and then went flying out the end! Holy sh+t!!! The sounds were as loud as fireworks! So you can probably guess what happened next…

HissAndARoar began repeating this experiment with this exact same setup. And then tried expanding the idea to other pipes…  But weirdly no other combination would produce the same effect!?!  Of maybe 20 different pipes (flexible, rigid, different diameters & lengths) there was only one that worked. Even using the same type of pipe but a slightly larger diameter would not work. So I went down to the hardware store & got a 20 metre roll of the exact same pipe and recorded lots more.

Sometimes the pipe would completely jam & HissAndARoar would have to cut off a chunk & abandon it. But after days of recording & then carefully trawling through they captured 48 of these complex shots, along with 90 of singular fast shots, zips & whizzes. (These were output as single Wav files as well as composite Wav files for SoundMiner/Radium use). They are such energetic sounds with very fast transients!
