QFX Smush is a one knob Foldback distortion plugin. Foldback distortion is also known as clipping distortion or overdrive distortion.
Musicians and sound engineers often use foldback distortion intentionally to create a desired sound effect. It is often used when playing electric guitars to add sustain, harmonic richness and a more aggressive edge to the sound, but can also be used with drums, vocal effects and synthesizer leads or bass parts.
When a signal is amplified beyond its maximum capacity, the waveform gets “clipped” or “folded back” to fit within the limits of the amplifier. This clipping creates harmonics and additional frequency components that were not present in the original signal. These added harmonics produce a characteristic sound that is often described as gritty, crunchy, or saturated.
In addition to the large rotary knob, you will find three preset foldback settings. This can be used to control the amount and character of the foldback distortion. In the background, QFX Smush does the math for you.
