Black Salt Audio’s Telos BASS is part of their popular “Telos” series—a line of all-in-one processing “strip” plugins designed to simplify complex mixing tasks. Just as Telos Drums and Telos Guitars focus on their respective instruments, Telos BASS is engineered to provide a fast, intuitive workflow for shaping bass guitar and synth bass tracks.
It follows Black Salt Audio’s philosophy of “mixing with your ears, not your eyes,” replacing traditional technical parameters with musical controls.
Why Use It?
- Speed: It replaces a chain of 4-5 separate plugins (EQ, Compressor, Saturation, Sub-Synth, Limiter).
- Simplicity: It uses percentages and descriptive terms rather than kHz and ratios, making it ideal for producers who want to stay in a creative flow.
- Consistency: It is particularly effective for “Modern” sounds (Rock, Metal, Pop) where a rock-solid, consistent low-end is required.
Telos BASS typically breaks down the bass processing chain into several streamlined sections:
- Sub & Low Sculpting: Instead of a standard EQ, it features dedicated controls to add weight or tighten the sub-frequencies without making the mix muddy.
- Grit & Saturation: A saturation module specifically tuned for bass frequencies. It adds harmonics that help the bass “cut through” on smaller speakers (like phones or laptops) where the fundamental low-end might be lost.
- Dynamic Control (Compression): A “one-knob” style compressor that handles the heavy lifting of leveling out a performance. It is internally optimized with attack and release times suited for bass transients.
- Clarity & Presence: Controls for the mid-range and top-end to add “finger noise” or definition to the attack of the notes.
- Limiter: A final stage to ensure the bass stays locked in place and doesn’t clip your output.
