The Igudesman Viola Grotesca is an unconventional 5-stringed instrument that merges the tonal qualities and range of a viola with the scale and reach of a violin, featuring a fifth string that extends into cello territory.
This unique instrument boasts a bulbous, lumpy body shape contributing to its fabulous resonance and a warm, gritty sound, especially pronounced in its lower registers, making it ideal for tracks requiring an unusual sonic element.
Developed in collaboration with renegade virtuoso Aleksey Igudesman, known for his boundary-pushing approach to classical music and frequent collaborations with Hans Zimmer, the Viola Grotesca captures his distinct techniques and aesthetic.
The instrument offers a variety of playable elements including sustain notes with legato, three short note options, chord patches with repetitions, an arpeggio patch with three tunings, and rhythmic ‘swashbuckler’ patterns.
Recorded at the Teldex Scoring Stage in Berlin, the Viola Grotesca is available through Orchestral Tools’ SINE platform, offering features like mic merging, auto keyswitch options, and the ability to download individual instruments or mic positions.
