Most digital distortion can feel “clean” or “predictable.” Intermod is built to provide that unpredictable, chaotic energy found in pushed analog circuits and radio transmissions. It’s particularly popular among Techno, Industrial, and Left-field Electronic producers who want to move away from “perfect” digital sounds.
Intermod is a specialized distortion and modulation plugin designed to create the complex, non-harmonic textures that occur when signals interfere with one another. Unlike standard saturation, it focuses on the “grit” found in vintage hardware and radio interference.
Features include:
- Intermodulation Engine: Unlike standard harmonic distortion that adds overtones based on a single frequency, Intermod generates “sum and difference” frequencies. This results in a more metallic, aggressive, and “broken” character.
- Cross-Modulation: It allows different frequency bands to modulate each other, perfect for creating “industrial” or lo-fi textures.
- Texture Controls: Usually includes parameters like Amount, Threshold, and often a Frequency Shift or Ring Mod style control to dial in the specific flavor of the distortion.
- Versatility: While it can be used subtly for warmth, it excels at sound design for bass, leads, and percussion where you want a “raw” or “unstable” analog feel.
