Auburn Sounds Release Psypan 2 + A FREE Edition

Auburn Sounds have released Psypan 2, available at the intro price of $29.00, increasing to $38.67 after the promotion. The offer ends August 15th. There’s a FREE Edition to download.

Fifteen years ago, long before Auburn Sounds became a recognized name in audio DSP, they released a simple, linear-phase binaural panner under the name GFM Psypan 1.0. Despite the release of newer spatial plug-ins like Panagement, top mix engineers kept reaching for the original GFM Psypan for its unique transient handling and temporal feel.

After deep analysis, Auburn Sounds discovered why: the original plugin’s 64-point sinc interpolation, subtle volume offsets, and intentional delay discrepancies created a secret sauce for cutting through dense mixes.

With Psypan 2, Auburn Sounds takes those original happy accidents, supercharges them with modern DSP, and expands the concept into a comprehensive 17-mode stereo manipulation suite.

The Evolution: Psy-1 vs. Psy-2

Rather than discarding legacy behavior, Psypan 2 preserves the original algorithm as Psy-1—delivering strict linear-phase binaural panning with 64-point sinc interpolation.

Alongside it debuts Psy-2, an upgraded binaural engine featuring:

  • 128-tap interpolation and 64-bit double precision.
  • Hand-tuned IIR spectral curves that move the sound image realistically in front of the listener—avoiding the “overhead pass” illusion common to older panners.
  • Tuned gain and delay offsets engineered to naturally pop elements out of a mix without phase issues.

More Than Just Binaural Panning

While Psypan started as a pure binaural tool, version 2 expands far beyond spatialization. It acts as a single multi-effect utility for all stereo field duties, divided into three core categories:

  1. Binaural Panning (5 Modes): Range from classic legacy algorithms to multiband processing that leaves your low-end intact and centered.
  2. Channel Balance & Stereo Control (3 Modes): Standard pan laws (-3 dB, -4.5 dB, -6 dB), dual panning, and dual stereo rotation for traditional width and channel placement without phase shift.
  3. Creative Spatialization (9 Modes): Tools designed for depth, width, and modulation—including Haas delays, micro-shifting, chorus, decramped peak EQ panners, doublers, and allpass stereo wideners.

Features include:

  • 17 Total Pan Modes: Cover everything from surgical channel balancing to creative spatial sound design (10 modes available in the Free Edition).
  • 5 Binaural Panning Modes:
    • Psy-1: Original 2011 GFM Psypan algorithm with strict linear-phase performance.
    • Psy-2: Next-gen algorithm with 128-tap, 64-bit precision, and realistic front-facing spatial rotation.
    • P1 & P2: Unmodified spatial algorithms from Panagement 1 and 2 (Full Edition).
    • 2-Band Binaural: Dual-band Psy-2 processing that keeps bass frequencies tight and centered.
  • 3 Channel Balance & Level Modes:
    • Balance Pan: Standard DAW panning with three selectable pan laws (-3 dB, -4.5 dB, -6 dB).
    • Dual Pan: Independent control over left and right channel levels.
    • Dual Stereo Rotation: Advanced channel rotation without phase or delay artifacts.
  • 9 Creative & Modulation Modes:
    • Haas Delay & M/S Haas Delay: Spatial width up to 200 ms (M/S mode in Full Edition).
    • µ-Shifting & M/S µ-Shifting: Pitch-shifting and delay combination for thick chorus-like effects (M/S mode in Full Edition).
    • Chorus: Classic stereo modulation.
    • Peak Panner & M/S Peak Panner: Directional decramped Ivantsov peak EQ for precise L, R, M, or S shaping (M/S mode in Full Edition).
    • Doubler: Enhanced Haas-style algorithm tailored for double-tracking instruments (Full Edition).
    • Widener: Pseudo-stereo generator using modulated allpass filter series.
  • Integrated Stereo Preprocess: Built-in stereo width adjustment preceding the main panning stage.

Psypan 2 is available to PC, Mac and Linux users (VST, AU, AAX, CLAP, LV2 and FLP).
