Soft Brew Mobile have released Ringo Beats: Chaos Drums, available as a FREE download with an optional.in-app purchase that unlocks the AUv3 Instrument and MIDI.
Most drum machines follow rigid rules: step sequencers execute grid patterns, static samples repeat endlessly, and humanize knobs add slight timing nudges to keep things from sounding entirely robotic.
Ringo Beats: Chaos Drums takes a completely different route. Instead of looping pre-programmed MIDI patterns or triggering audio clips, it generates drum parts live using chaotic mathematical equations filtered through a self-learning Markov model.
The core philosophy of the app is simple yet clever: Chaos proposes, the policy disposes.
Traditional generative beatmakers usually rely on basic random number generators. Ringo Beats uses three distinct dynamical systems to generate rhythms from scratch:
- Lorenz Attractor: Drives the primary dynamic engine behind the kick, snare, and clap.
- Hénon Map: Controls the flickering micro-rhythms and variations of the hi-hats.
- Logistic Map: Determines when and how chaotic drum fills detonate.
Because these nonlinear equations are deterministic, they create complex, evolving structures rather than pure noise.
To turn raw chaotic signal into musical rhythm, Ringo Beats routes these values into a per-voice Markov policy. This engine learns from its own output over time, reinforcing patterns that groove and filtering out musical nonsense.
You control the interplay between raw mathematical turbulence and structured rhythm using a primary BLEND slider.
