over:tone is a collaborative sample library for Decent Sampler created by Venus Theory and Dave Hilowitz. Built on sampled guitar and string harmonics, it bypasses the standard limitations of natural scale positions to make harmonics fully playable across the keyboard, offering a fresh hybrid take on stringed instruments.
Standard sampled guitar libraries rarely capture the real feeling of playing an actual instrument. While full notes from a guitar often feel static in a sampler, lacking the nuance of a ‘real’ performance, string harmonics possess a clarity and natural dynamic movement that instantly stands out as prime sampling material.
With over:tone, the goal was simple: take the unique timbre of harmonics out of their normally fixed tuning positions and transform them into a fully chromatic, playable instrument engine.
The core sound sources were captured across a wide variety of stringed instruments, including acoustic guitars, electric guitars, bass guitars, a Bass VI, and a cello.
To expand the palette beyond traditional string sounds, these raw recordings were resampled, pitch-shifted, and sculpted using hardware units, spectral filtering, and custom effect chains. The result is a library that balances the pure acoustic resonance of natural harmonics with evolving, synthetic textures that blend together seamlessly.
over:tone gives you three independent sound layers to mix, stack, and shape:
- Layer Editors: Dedicated controls for each layer, letting you balance individual levels and shape the overall sound.
