Aethis DSP Release Aethis

Aethis DSP have released Aethis, available for $34.99. Use code PROMO20 to claim a 20% discount (intro offer).

Aethis is a guitar plugin that covers everything between your guitar and your recording: three amps recorded from real tube amplifiers, ten pedals, two mic’d speaker cabinets, an equalizer, a tuner, and a harmonizer that handles chords rather than one note at a time.

It runs inside your recording software, or on its own.

The amps

Three amps to choose from. Each one was recorded from a real tube amplifier, so it reacts to your picking the way the original does.

Noctis is the high-gain amp for heavy music, and it stays clear even in low tunings. Ember is the rock amp — play softer and it cleans up, dig in and it breaks up. Lumina is the clean amp, with enough headroom to stay clean however hard you play. Each one has two channels you can switch between mid-song.

Pedals before the amp

Four pedals that sit between your guitar and the amp, which is where most of your gain and tightness comes from.

A boost to push the amp harder, a noise gate to silence hum between notes, a compressor to even out your playing, and a drive pedal with two switchable circuits: an overdrive modelled on the Ibanez TS808 and a Big Muff style fuzz. The compressor can work on the whole signal at once, or on just the low, middle or high frequencies.

The equalizer

A nine-band equalizer for shaping your tone, which you can place either before or after the amp.

A live display shows the frequencies in your signal as you play, so you can see exactly what you are boosting or cutting instead of guessing at it.

The speaker cabinet

After the amp, the sound goes through a speaker cabinet recorded with microphones — this is what gives a guitar amp its final character.

You get two speakers with a microphone on each, and six microphones to pick from. Drag a microphone across the speaker to change the tone: near the centre is brighter, out toward the edge is warmer. If you have your own impulse response files, you can load those instead.

Pedals after the amp

Three effects that sit after the amp, where time-based effects normally go.

Chorus makes the sound wider, delay repeats what you play, and reverb puts it in a room. The delay has three characters — a clean digital repeat, a warmer vintage one, and an ambient wash that blurs into a tail — and it can lock to your project tempo.

The polyphonic harmonizer

Most guitar harmonizers listen for one note at a time, so a chord confuses them. This one shifts the audio itself, which means chords come out as chords — and so do fast runs, double stops and anything else you play.

Add up to four extra voices alongside your part. Set the intervals yourself, lock them to a key so they always fit what you are playing, or play them from a MIDI keyboard. Formants are preserved, so a voice a fifth up still sounds like a guitar. Each voice has its own volume, stereo position, fine tuning and timing.

Bitcrush, phaser and flanger

Three effects for when you want something less conventional.

Bitcrush breaks the signal down into a rough, lo-fi sound. The phaser and flanger both create a sweeping movement through the tone — gentle at low settings, dramatic at high ones. The phaser has twice the stages of a typical pedal, which makes the sweep thicker.

The tuner

A tuner built into the plugin, so you do not need a separate one.

It shows how far each string is from being in tune and mutes your signal while you work, so nothing goes out to the room or into the recording. You can change the reference pitch if you tune to something other than standard.

Aethis is available to PC, Mac and Linux users (VST3, AU, CLAP and standalone)
