Initial Audio Release Difro 2

Initial Audio have released Difro 2, available for $69.00.

What’s new in version 2:

  • Brand new Difro 2 model – Trained from scratch for tighter phrasing, better chord movement, and generations that stay musical over longer stretches.
  • Model picker – Switch between the Difro 1 model, the new Difro 2 model, and any named Feedback models you create.
  • Named Feedback models – Pick a Difro base, rate generations, and give the adapter a name. Keep several personal models and jump between them anytime.
  • MIDI Prompt Packs – Prompt models are now MIDI Prompt Packs. Five new packs ship in 2.0 — Pop, Trance, Luxury Keys, Omega, Platinum Factory — and every factory pack has been rebuilt.
  • Session History – Every generation and its original MIDI stays in a history view. Bookmark keepers or reload them later.
  • Faster by default, wider Mac support – GPU is selected automatically when available. Free users now get 80 generations per month. macOS 12 Monterey is the new minimum.

Unlike many cloud-dependent AI tools that require an internet connection, a subscription fee, or leave you waiting on a remote server queue, Difro does something entirely different. It runs 100% locally on your own machine—leveraging your CPU or local GPU (like Apple Silicon or NVIDIA) to act essentially as a “MIDI GPT”.

Difro isn’t just spitting out random notes. Under the hood, it uses a Variational Autoencoder (VAE) and Transformer architecture. You can drop in an existing chord progression, hum/play a quick idea live into the piano roll, or use one of their prompt packs. Difro analyzes the rhythm, contour, and harmony, and then uses a Creativity Slider to help you “ReImagine” variations bar-by-bar. It keeps the soul of your original idea intact while writing something fresh.

Because everything runs offline on your computer, there are no surprise API bills, no lagging server queues, and total privacy for your unreleased projects. You just play, generate, and drag the result straight into Ableton, FL Studio, Logic, or Cubase as MIDI or audio (via built-in WAV rendering).

You don’t even need to open up a massive template just to hear what your ideas sound like. Difro features built-in VST3/AU plugin hosting (plus a light version of Initial Audio’s SourceLab synth) so you can preview your newly generated melodies immediately through your favorite instruments.
