M Media Audio have released Thunderbuss Mix, available as a FREE download.
Meet Thunderbuss Mix, the first in a collection of five completely free bus processors. Vari-mu compression, rich tube saturation and a powerful brickwall limiter, all packed into five simple controls. Serious processing without the complicated nonsense.
Every week, another Thunderbuss joins the family: Mix, Drums, Bass, Instruments and Vocals. Five dedicated processors. Five weeks. Not a penny required.
Switch the meter to VU and the needle reads output peak with 0 set to the -0.3 dBFS ceiling – with the limiter engaged, it physically can’t pass 0. Flip to GR and watch the compressor work instead.
Threshold is the only control – everything else is locked to a program-dependent vari-mu character, with automatic makeup so turning the knob changes the glue, not the volume. SC HP adds a sidechain high-pass so the kick and bass don’t drive the gain reduction and pump the rest of the mix with them.
Saturation adds one more knob of color, level-matched so more Saturation means more character, not more volume stacking on top of the compressor.
- Threshold – vari-mu compression, auto makeup
- SC HP – keeps the kick from driving the gain reduction
- Saturation – level-matched tube color
Most free limiters chase a transient after it’s already there. Thunderbuss Mix’s lookahead and hold window mean the gain is already down before a peak arrives, and a two-speed release lets fast hits recover to where the mix is actually sitting – not dive back to zero and pump on every one. An envelope-relative soft clipper ahead of the limiter shaves the tops off stray spikes so the limiter has less to pull down on each one.
The ceiling never moves: -0.3 dBFS, always – and the VU meter proves it, with 0 set right at that line.
- Lookahead limiter – 5ms, with hold and two-speed release
- Soft clipper – shaves transient spikes before the limiter
- Peak VU – 0 = the -0.3 dBFS ceiling, physically can’t pass it
Thunderbuss Mix is the first of five free Thunderbuss bus processors. Drums, Bass, Instruments and Vocals follow over the next month, each built on the same engine and retuned for its own job – collect the whole set.
Thunderbuss Mix is available to PC and Mac users (VST3 and AU).
