Every mixing engineer and music producer knows the “louder is better” trap. You drop a compressor, saturation plugin, or EQ onto a track, dial in your settings, and suddenly the track sounds punchier and more exciting. But is it actually better, or did the processing just raise the volume and throw off your entire mix balance?
When processing changes a track’s level, it skews your perception and disrupts the delicate volume relationships you worked hard to build. That’s where Anchor comes in—a free utility plugin designed to solve this exact problem.
Anchor operates as a lightweight, paired system made up of two modules: ANCHOR START and ANCHOR END.
- Place ANCHOR START at the beginning of your insert chain (or before an individual plugin).
- Place ANCHOR END after your processing chain.
As you play your audio, ANCHOR START measures the pre-processed reference level completely transparently without altering your signal. ANCHOR END then compares the audio leaving your processing chain against that reference and automatically applies a single broadband trim gain adjustment.
If your compressor or EQ boosted the output, ANCHOR END dials it back down. If heavy saturation pulled the level down, ANCHOR END brings it back up. Your processing character—harmonics, EQ curves, dynamic compression, stereo enhancement—remains completely untouched. Only the volume delta is corrected.
