oeksound have released Soothe3, available Soothe3 is available.for $259.00. Upgrade from Soothe2 for only $55.00.
What’s new:
- New, improved algorithms
- Soft mode: our most transparent resonance suppression, with an adaptive threshold. Ideal for most sound sources, works especially well with dynamic instruments.
- Hard mode: in the style of Soothe2, with a fixed threshold. Ideal for more aggressive control and popular sidechain effects.
- Low latency mode
- In low latency mode Soothe3 adds zero samples of latency at base sample rates and ~1 ms at higher sample rates, enabling tracking and live applications.
- Workflow improvements
- Detail parameter combines Soothe2’s sharpness and selectivity under one control for more streamlined use.
- More flexibility with nodes: Create or delete nodes, and choose between eight different band shapes – including bandpass and tilt – to make adjustments quickly.
- Collapsible side panel: Keep essential controls at hand and more advanced settings out of the way when working fast.
- More advanced controls
- Multichannel support: Soothe3 supports up to 9.1.6 channel configurations with full control over the linking of channel sets.
- Customize Soothe’s response with tilt controls: Scale detail, attack and release frequency-dependently.
- Max cut parameter: Drive Soothe harder while keeping the biggest cuts in check.
- Linear phase mode can be useful for parallel processing, or when using unlinked processing in mid-side to prevent changes in panning
Soothe3 is the third studio version of Soothe, the plug-in that won the support of the world’s top professionals. In addition to Soothe, Soothe2, and Soothe3, oeksound has created Soothe Live (2023) for the Avid VENUE S6L consoles and the Fourier transform.engine, as well as other oeksound plug-ins, Bloom (2024) and Spiff (2019).
The newest iteration of Soothe retains many familiar elements of Soothe2, while improving on others. The new detail parameter, for example, combines the sharpness and detail parameters from Soothe2 for a more streamlined workflow. The hideable side panel contains the usual stereo controls, along with the new tilt and max cut parameters.
Along with workflow improvements, some features open up completely new environments where Soothe3 can be used. The low-latency mode allows users to use Soothe in tracking to give the artist more polished sounds to monitor, or in live mixing. Soothe3’s multichannel functions open new possibilities in immersive formats, supporting up to 9.1.6 setups.
The most important aspect of the new Soothe, however, is that it simply sounds better. According to Aleksi Taipale, the product lead for Soothe3, “the DSP algorithm has been redesigned and is now significantly more transparent in everyday use. This makes speedier use safer, so that users can get to the more musical side of their work faster without having to spend too much time tweaking Soothe.“
Soft and hard modes were introduced in Soothe2, but their differences are now more pronounced. Soft mode is almost completely level-independent, while hard mode is the opposite. This means that soft mode is more suited for dealing with resonances, and hard mode has a more compressor-like behavior.
These differences add up to a bigger sweet spot and less obtrusive presence, explains Tommi Gröhn, oeksound’s principal DSP architect: “Soothe2 definitely has a characteristic sound to it when pushed. The fundamental research challenge for us was to minimise this recognisable character while still keeping the process pinpoint accurate at fixing the actual problems. This is the major difference compared to Soothe2: Soothe3 is more aware of the overall tonal balance of the source, making it more selective and better suited especially for full range processing. This also results in a wider sweet spot, that in turn makes it faster to use and less likely to introduce new problems while fixing existing ones.”
