Noisebud Release Hiss

Noisebud have released Hiss, available via Patreon for $7.00 per month or a one-time payment of $15.00 for scripts or $39.00 for plugins.

Hiss is a spectral processor built for a very specific problem: harsh resonances that are difficult to remove without changing too much around them.

The idea for Hiss started with a mastering job. The mix was great, but the vocal S sounds were too sharp. I tried the usual contenders; de-essers, dynamic EQs, de-harshers, Gullfoss, Soothe, TEOTE, and a lot of other tools.

None of them did exactly what I wanted.

I did not want to turn down the entire S sound. I wanted to remove the worst resonant peaks inside it while keeping the noisy, airy part of the consonant intact.

Hiss separates the selected frequency area into three parts:

  • Tonal: the resonances Hiss finds
  • Noise: the remaining noise-like content
  • Rest: everything else

Tonal and Noise can be adjusted independently, so you can reduce harsh resonances while preserving air and articulation, or reduce a gritty noise component without flattening the tonal structure of the sound.

Hiss can find between 1 and 20 resonances and works across the full frequency spectrum, from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. It can be used for vocals, harsh cymbals, ringing instruments, brittle synths, distorted guitars, low-mid resonances, and other problems where conventional processing affects too much around the actual issue.

Hiss is available to PC and Mac users (VST3 and AU).
