What’s new in version.2.0:
- New: MIDI Tape Recorder as a standalone app. No host required: record, overdub, and play back MIDI right on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, with CoreMIDI input and output routing to your other apps and hardware. Recording keeps running in the background and with screen the locked.
- Sessions and documents. Your work is autosaved, and you can save, open, and share .mtrec session files.
- New: continuous loop record. An opt-in option that keeps the loop rolling and re-records over your take on each pass instead of stopping at the end, refine a part without ever breaking your flow,
- Hardened MIDI file import: malformed .mic files can no longer cause out-of-bounds reads or event desync
- Importing an empty (note-less) track now correctly clears the destination track.

If you’ve ever played a deeply expressive synth patch or an intricate MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression) performance into a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW), you might have noticed a frustrating phenomenon: it doesn’t sound quite like what you actually played.
Modern DAWs are brilliant for editing, but they are built around grids, quantizing, and rigid event buffers. To make note editing easy, DAWs frequently reorder, alter, or micro-delay dense streams of MIDI data. For standard synth lines, this is fine. Enter MIDI Tape Recorder (MTR), an open-source AUv3 plugin for iOS and macOS that approaches MIDI recording with a radically different philosophy: treat MIDI like tape.
Most MIDI sequencers give you note grids, velocity curves, and endless options to tweak individual Continuous Controller (CC) parameters.
MIDI Tape Recorder intentionally gives you none of that.
Instead, it functions like a traditional 4-track tape machine. It captures raw MIDI messages in real time with sample-accurate timing. Whatever note data, pitch bend, pressure, or CC movements you send into it are recorded and played back exactly as they occurred—without grid forcing, micro-shifting, or event quantization.
