For songwriters and producers, translating a hummed idea into a finished track can be a clunky process. Standard pitch-to-MIDI converters often produce erratic results, and editing harmonies manually takes time away from writing.
Melody Rack is a dedicated MIDI effect plugin that addresses this by converting vocal takes or keyboard lines into live, harmony-aware MIDI data directly inside your DAW.
Because Melody Rack is a MIDI effect rather than a virtual instrument, it produces no audio on its own. Instead, it sits ahead of your synths or samplers on the channel strip, generating and modifying note data in real time. You can input ideas by singing into a microphone, playing a keyboard, or running existing MIDI regions through the plugin. Once captured, a neural pitch engine detects your performance, preserving expressive pitch curves like vocal scoops and slides while filtering out true missteps.
The heart of the plugin consists of 14 customizable MIDI effect strips that process your performance using rule-based music theory. The Chords strip automatically detects a progression from your line, feeding that context to downstream processors. Effects like In Key align notes to the underlying chord, Harmony adds voice-led second lines, and Bones extracts the core structural notes of a verse to construct a variation for a chorus. Other modules include smart arpeggiators, Euclidean rhythm generators, diatonic note delays, and probability tools that all adjust dynamically as the chords change.
Output from Melody Rack streams live into your instruments or exports directly to your timeline via drag-and-drop as standard MIDI or MPE clips. You can separate the output to drag out individual harmonies, arpeggios, or chord progressions separately. Users of the broader Song Cage app can also send takes straight to their inbox to write lyrics alongside the new parts.
