When tracking vocals, recording instruments, or performing live through virtual instruments, Round-Trip Latency (RTL) is one of the most critical factors in an audio workflow.
If the sound traveling through headphones is delayed by even a few milliseconds relative to bone conduction and natural room acoustics, the artist’s natural pitch and timing feedback loop breaks down. This often leads to pitch pitchiness, double-hearing, or stiff performances.
While audio interface manufacturers frequently brag about low latency on paper, their published numbers often only reflect theoretical minimum buffer settings under idealized conditions. Other brands simply add a physical “Direct Monitor” button, bypassing plugin processing entirely and depriving performers of hearing real-time effects like reverb or vocal tuning during tracking.
Round-trip latency isn’t just about the audio interface driver; it is the total time required for an analog signal to convert to digital (ADC), pass through your DAW, process buffer blocks, and convert back to analog (DAC).
Standard manual measurements can be inaccurate due to transients created by DAC and ADC converters. MathAudio Latency Meter solves this by employing a correlation-based measurement method. By routing a physical loopback cable from your interface’s line output to its line input, the plugin sends a controlled reference signal and measures the exact offset with sub-millisecond precision.
